Internship Program
Gateway to a Professional Theatre Career
|
Academic experience is insufficient for students to make a successful transition into
the theatre profession. That’s why, since 1946, Westport Country Playhouse has provided
professional training through an aggressive, hands-on internship program.
Interns are not only immersed in their chosen field, they are give the tools they will need to become
future leaders in the industry. Their work with a community of dedicated theatre professionals will be
rewarded with superior resume experience, professional connections and college credit.

At Westport Country Playhouse every one works together as a team in order to provide
our audience with the best possible performance.
Internships are broken into two distinct, but equally important, categories: Production and Administration.

Production Internships
Production internships focus primarily on the building, managing, and execution of the 2009 productions at Westport Country Playhouse.
Company Management
Report to the Company Manager and assist with actor, director and other artist contracts
and travel arrangements. Strong problem-solving and communication skills, along with a good sense of
humor and warm personality are crucial to attend to the needs and requirements of our artists.
Front of House responsibility expected.
General Production
Report to the Production Manager. Rotating between several departments including scenic construction, electrics and properties as needed. Significant hands-on experience in multiple production areas. Prior experience and/or classroom instruction is essential and enthusiasm and positive attitude are key.
Run Crew responsibility expected.
Properties
Find, build and modify practical elements on stage with work in carpentry, sculpting, metalwork, sewing and upholstery.
Run Crew responsibility expected.
Scenic Painting
Prior experience/background in art required, as well as the ability to draw and control paint whle you bring scenic elements to life with texture, shade and tone.
Stage Management
Assist the Stage Manager in all aspects of their work including attendance at production meetings, rehearsals and technical rehearsals. Rehearsals may be held in both New York City and Westport.
Run Crew responsibility expected.
Wardrobe
Assist with shopping for shows, costume maintenance and alterations.
Run Crew responsibility expected.
Administration Internships
Productions are only half of what it takes to run a nationally renowned professional theatre. Learn how the other
half lives. Applicants should be well-versed in Microsoft computer systems including Windows and Excel, be
well-organized, and possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
Artistic/Literary
Report to the Artistic department and to the intern’s assigned Directors. Assist with all aspects of the literary and artistic components of production. Specific responsibilities will be developed based on the needs of the individual show/director.
Front of House and/or Run Crew responsibility expected.
Arts Management/Finance
These positions report to the Managing Director or the Director of Finance and will assist with all aspects of theatrical business management including budgets, contracts and fiscal reporting. A strong interest in theatrical management is required.
Front of House crew responsibility expected.
Education
Report to the Director of Education. Assist with the planning and implementation of all educational programming including, but not limited to, the Apprentice program, symposiums, artist hours, special events, outreach, Family Festivities pre-show activities, administrative tasks and co-teaching workshops. Flexibility, the ability to multi-task, a good sense of humor and solid level of comfort working with high school students preferred.
Front of House and/or Run Crew responsibility expected.
Marketing/Development
Report to the Director of Marketing and the Director of Development.
Assist with the planning and implementation of seasonal marketing materials, budgeting, strategic planning, press releases, opening night and fund raising events, audience and donor cultivation events, and grant writing. Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office) required. Front of House and/or Run Crew responsibility expected. |
Success Is In The Details
Westport Country Playhouse provides: Off-site housing (own transportation required to and from Playhouse) $100 weekly stipend ($150 for returning interns) College credit and EMC candidate points Written evaluations by department head and Director of Education at conclusion of internship. Application Process We have filled all our intern positions for the Summer of 2009. We encourage you to apply for the 09-10 academic year.
In addition to the completed application, applicants must include two (2) letters of recommendation.
