...a first-rate night out at the theater...Wiltse freely admits he didn't set out to write anything deep or meaningful. "I wanted to write a farce," he says. "Something that would entertain people and make them laugh." What he ended up with is a work of comedic gold...Scramble! elicited not only countless bursts of loud laughter at Westport Country Playhouse, but also extended fits of spontaneous, mid-scene applause...by using all of theater's devices—clever wordplay, pregnant pauses, sight gags and slapstick physicality—Wiltse barely lets the audience breathe between jokes. So well-paced is the comic build-up, so intricately constructed the inter-character dynamics, and so outrageous the conceit behind it all, that Scramble! is a riotous masterwork...WCP has returned to the level of crisp professionalism that has earned it countless theatrical accolades, and Scramble! shows the Playhouse at its best...every once in a while it's important to take a break from heavy contemplation and just laugh.
