Following the Civil War, many
former slaves take advantage of The Homestead Act and go West. The women
settlers of Nicodemus, Kansas face long, cold winters, the possibility of
violence and continuing racial conflict - in short, a life on the prairie in
1898. But the Dove women are strong, and up to the challenge. When their
head-strong baby sister Minnie comes home from London with her mixed-race
husband Frank, they face an unexpected danger that tests their sisterhood and
their way of life in unexpected ways.
