Following the Civil War, many former slaves take advantage of The Homestead Act and go West. The women settlers of Nicodemus, Kansas face long, cold winters, the possibility of violence and continuing racial conflict - in short, a life on the prairie in 1898. But the Dove women are strong, and up to the challenge. When their head-strong baby sister Minnie comes home from London with her mixed-race husband Frank, they face an unexpected danger that tests their sisterhood and their way of life in unexpected ways.

Gardner and Fanny Church are preparing to move out of their Beacon Hill house. Gardner, once a famous poet, now retired slips in and out of ofsenility as his wife Fanny valiantly tries to keep them both afloat.Their daughter Mags comes home to help, hoping to finally paint their portrait. She is on the verge of artistic celebrity and hopes, by painting her parents, to come to terms with them, and they with her.





The Script in Hand Playreading Series is curated by Anne Keefe, Playhouse Associate Artistic .  She co-directed with Joanne Woodward the Playhouse production of David Copperfield, directed readings of And Then There Were None, Harvey, Bedroom Farce and A Song at Twilight, and appeared in A Holiday Garland and a reading of Arsenic and Old Lace.  She is a former Westport Country Playhouse Artistic Director.
