Restoration France, 1818. What begins as a simple job of art conservation brings Madame Anne Dulac, newly returned from exile, together with Jean Howlitz, a former painter with a complicated past, and Roderick Calley, the quick-witted man charged with managing her affairs.
As the restoration unfolds, all three find themselves reckoning with the past and with the new world they have somehow managed to survive.
Funny, moving, and constantly surprising, Nicky Glossman’s Portrait of a Woman in Repose is a tour-de-force for three veteran actors about art, memory, survival, and what it means to restore what has been lost.

For our 100th reading, I knew we wanted to present something truly special, filled with wit, charm, and heart. Portrait of a Woman in Repose is all of that, as well as a feast for three wonderful actors - and I am so proud to welcome such an extraordinary cast to the Playhouse for this landmark night. Under James Glossman’s always superb direction, I know this will be an evening our audience will be talking about for a long time to come. Nicky Glossman’s beautiful play is the perfect script to celebrate this milestone as well as all of the exciting new work the Playhouse will be engaging with throughout the coming season."

Every Script in Hand playreading is a brand new experience.
At a Script in Hand playreading, there’s nothing between you and the actors on stage. These readings bring actors who’ve just met — or who’ve known each other for years — together for one day to rehearse and perform a play on a bare stage, with simple lighting — and you. The audience is in charge of conjuring the set, costumes, and atmosphere — or nothing at all. Actors, audience, and the director come together to create a special, one-night-only experience.
