This summer, the Playhouse kicks off its seventh annual educational and community engagement initiative, with the production of Ayad Akhtar's The Invisible Hand.

As in past seasons, we have teamed up with a host of community partners to bring the public an array of exciting events, most free-of-charge!

Film Screening: The War Within

Presented in partnership with the Westport Cinema Initiative Additional support provided by Joseph and Joan Cullman Foundation for the Arts.

In 2005, The Invisible Hand playwright Ayad Akhtar co-wrote and starred in The War Within, the story of Hassan, a Pakistani engineering student who becomes radicalized as a result of being abducted and interrogated by U.S. authorities. The screening will be followed by a brief talkback.

During the run of The Invisible hand, excerpts from an interview with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Ayad Akhtar will play on the lobby television prior to each performance.  A map of Pakistan highlighting various areas mentioned in the play and a timeline of significant events in U.S./Pakistan relations since 9/11 will also be on display.

Join us at the Westport Library for an engaging discussion of Ayad Akhtar’s novel, American Dervish, the story of a young boy growing up in the American Midwest and his struggle with his identity and religion. This discussion is offered as part of the Westport Library’s Pageturners general interest book club. Copies of American Dervish, as well as a reader's discussion guide, are available for check-out at the library, or may be reserved by calling 203.291.4821.

Engineer, writer & academic Haris Durani talks about his fiction debut Technologies of the Self. In this sci-fi  novella, the Westport native immerses readers in the life of a young American Muslim struggling to understand himself in the context of his family, classmates, and contemporary urban life.  Visit Westportlibrary.org for more information.

Join Dr. Martin Nguyen, Associate Professor of Islamic Religious Traditions at Fairfield University, and Khadija Gurnah, founder of Project Ejaba, an organization that advocates for Muslim youth, as they consider the many complex factors confronted by young Muslims as they negotiate the intersection of religion and culture and the efforts of community activists to address the challenges they face.

Discount ticket price of $10 includes dinner and the show; must attend as a family group (with student-age children). For tickets, call 203-227-4177. Recommend for ages 14+. 

Together at the Table Family Dinners allow families to enjoy a communal dinner in our rehearsal barn and a casual conversation about the production before attending a performance. This program aims to make live theater accessible to more families and to introduce young audience members to Westport Country Playhouse in a warm and informal atmosphere.
