Our 2025 Script in Hand series concludes!

Stay tuned for the title announcement of our December Script in Hand playreading!

Playwright Heidi Schreck’s boundary-breaking, Obie Award–winning play breathes new life into the United States Constitution and imagines how it might shape the next generation of Americans.

At fifteen, Heidi earned her college tuition by competing in Constitutional debate competitions across the country. In this hilarious, hopeful, and achingly human play, she revisits her teenage self to explore how this living document has shaped her family, her future, and the very fabric of our nation.

New York Times Critic’s PickTony Award nominee, and Pulitzer Prize finalistWhat the Constitution Means to Me is a buoyant, deeply personal, and thought-provoking exploration of how our nation’s defining document continues to influence our lives and ideals. With humor, heart, and insight, Heidi Schreck invites us to consider what the Constitution means today, and what it could mean for the future.

I’m so proud to share this remarkable piece of theatre with our Playhouse audience. Heidi Schreck has created a funny, heartfelt, and profoundly thoughtful play that asks us to look with honesty, humor, and compassion at the ideas that have shaped our country. At a time when our nation can feel divided, this play reminds us how deeply personal our shared history is, and how vital it is that we always continue to keep questioning, listening, learning, and hoping for a path forward together.

-Mark Shanahan, Artistic Director

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

Endearingly funny and deeply affecting, it would be hard to identify a work for the theater with its finger more on the pulse of American right now."

The Washington Post

Uproariously funny, wrenchingly moving, critically challenging, and politically inspiring."

The New York Review of Books

ABOUT SCRIPT IN HAND PLAYREADINGS

Every Script in Hand playreading is a brand new experience.

At a Script in Hand playreading, there’s nothing between you and the actors on stage. These readings bring actors who’ve just met — or who’ve known each other for years — together for one day to rehearse and perform a play on a bare stage, with simple lighting — and you. The audience is in charge of conjuring the set, costumes, and atmosphere — or nothing at all. Actors, audience, and the director come together to create a special, one-night-only experience.
