The Goldsmith stems from Broadway Actress Sharone Sayegh’s true love story as a first-generation American. Told through the stories of the golden jewelry passed down through her family, from Iraq to Israel to America, Sharone wrestles with identity, belonging, multiplicity of self, and acceptance. This solo play moves, surprises, and inspires the audience to investigate the stories and legacies with which we adorn ourselves throughout our lives across borders, cultures, and generations.
“I am thrilled and honored to bring The Goldsmith back to the Playhouse after presenting it as part of the Barnstormers series at the Playhouse this past summer. I am particularly moved to mention that since Westport Country Playhouse has been an early and integral part of this play’s developmental journey, it has propelled us to receive great acclaim at other theaters, most recently winning Theatre Aspen’s Solo Play Festival this past fall, and a theatrical production grant from Reboot Studios. This play has proven to strike a deep chord with people of all backgrounds who resonate with the first-generation experience, and the family dynamics and legacies we all carry throughout our lives. Having been a part of multiple playhouse productions and script-in-hand presentations, I am especially excited to share my very personal story with script-in-hand audiences, who I know to be incredibly smart, engaging, and trustworthy.”

“I’m thrilled to present The Goldsmith to our Script in Hand audience — and especially excited that it marks our very first solo show in the series. The Goldsmith is a beautiful exploration of identity, family, faith, and culture — deeply insightful, wonderfully funny, and brilliantly performed. Sharone is a valued member of our creative community, and when we presented a workshop reading to a small crowd in our Barnstormer Series a year ago, the audience response was immediate and enthusiastic. Our patrons enthusiastically requested we share it again with a wider audience. Since then, the play has gone on to win awards and earn wide recognition, and its future is incredibly promising. I am so pleased that the Playhouse is in on the ground floor of Sharone’s exciting work. Her story feels at once deeply personal yet beautifully universal — a remarkable play from a remarkable writer and actor.”

ABOUT SCRIPT IN HAND PLAYREADINGS
Every Script in Hand playreading is a brand new experience.
At a Script in Hand playreading, there’s nothing between you and the actors on stage. These readings bring actors who’ve just met — or who’ve known each other for years — together for one day to rehearse and perform a play on a bare stage, with simple lighting — and you. The audience is in charge of conjuring the set, costumes, and atmosphere — or nothing at all. Actors, audience, and the director come together to create a special, one-night-only experience.
